#WCW: Alexis Rowe
Alexis Rowe underwent a huge change recently. No, I’m not talking about her move cross-country, to a state in which she knew no one. No, I’m also not referring to her taking the bull by the horns and graduating from the prestigious University of Texas, Austin. And you’d better believe I’m not talking about the change she made to pursue her teaching career a city that brings out the best in her. Instead, Alexis took an even bigger step: she embraced her natural hair.
I’ve known Alexis since she was 12. As my sister’s (Robyn!) best friend growing up she was always around our family. Soft-spoken yet undeniably beautiful, Alexis has always been steady and motivated. She excelled in sports throughout high school and shocked our sleepy SoCal community when she announced that she was pursuing her degree in Austin, Texas. Alexis has it going on.
Many may think her changing her hair isn’t something to should have attention brought to it, but as a bi-racial woman, it’s a big deal to Alexis. We’d comment all the time on how beautiful she was. Her response? “Tell that to my curly hair and my big booty!” She has now shifted the narrative away from what was once a slight complex, her perceived dent in her armor, to one of strength, confidence and natural beauty. When she posted on her Instagram a gorgeous selfie of her natural hair we all went nuts. She’s just as stunning now as she ever has been and her courage is inspirational. She’s still taking it day-by-day, but aren’t we all? So here’s to you, Alexis! I hope you continue to radiate your natural beauty and embrace your incredible confidence that inspires us all.
xx, Courtney

with:
Alexis Rowe
d&r: Do you have a nickname?
AR: “Big Al”, I hated it in high school. I played basketball and was always really tall so that’s what the team called me. Also some people call me Lex or Lexie
d&r: When did you feel your greatest accomplishment?
AR: It’s definitely a culmination of a few things, but definitely moving to Texas for school without knowing a soul and leaving my family and friends behind in San Diego.
d&r: What habit do you tend to do when you are stressed or sad?
AR: I tend to shut down and binge watch TV
d&r: What’s your favorite childhood memory?
AR: I used to go to my grandma’s house after school with my cousins. We’d bond and play and just form great memories. We still are pretty close today.
d&r: What does it mean to be a female today?
AR: [I think it’s about] lifting each other up and being honest and real with each other. It was really hard to wear my hair curly at first, but my best friend encouraged me to wear it natural. I think that’s what being female is about. Being supportive and encouraging, but also being honest and holding each other accountable.
